Meaning: star
From the root N-J-M meaning star. An-Najm (The Star) is the 53rd surah of the Quran.
Najma (نجمة) literally translates to 'star' or 'a single celestial body.' In Arabic linguistics, it carries connotations of brilliance, guidance, and high status, often used metaphorically to describe someone who stands out or shines brightly among others. The name evokes the image of a light in the darkness, symbolizing hope and aspiration.
In Islamic tradition, stars are regarded as signs of God's creation and tools for navigation and guidance. The name represents the values of enlightenment, constancy, and the pursuit of higher truths. It reflects the spiritual idea of being a 'guiding light' for others, mirroring the way stars guided travelers through the desert.
The root N-J-M (ن-ج-م) appears several times in the Quran, most notably as the title of Surah An-Najm (Chapter 53). The singular form 'Najm' is explicitly mentioned in Surah An-Nahl (16:16), stating 'and by the stars they guide themselves,' and in Surah At-Tariq (86:3) as 'the piercing star.'
While Najma is a traditional name, it was famously borne by Najma Khatun, the mother of the prominent 8th-century scholar Imam Ali al-Ridha. It has also been a popular name among noblewomen and poets throughout various Islamic dynasties, particularly in South Asia and the Levant.
Bearers of the name Najma are traditionally perceived as ambitious, visionary, and possessing a natural charisma that draws others toward them. They are often associated with a calm yet radiant temperament, intellectual depth, and a strong sense of direction in life.
The name is pronounced 'NAJ-mah.' The first syllable 'NAJ' uses a short 'a' sound like in 'apple,' followed by a soft 'j' sound. The second syllable 'mah' is a soft breathy 'm' followed by a short 'a' sound, ending with a light, almost silent 'h' sound produced at the back of the throat.
In the Abjad system, the numerical value of Najma (ن=50, ج=3, م=40, ة/ه=5) is 98. This number is sometimes associated with resilience and the completion of a cycle, reflecting the steady and enduring nature of a star in the night sky.
